The question I get asked most often

Buyers contact me asking whether they should source from the UK or from mainland Europe. It's a reasonable question — but it's usually the wrong one. The answer that actually helps is: the country matters less than the brand, the documented history, and the condition of the specific machine. I source across both markets every week, and the best available machine for a given spec and budget is sometimes in Yorkshire, sometimes in Bavaria, sometimes in the Netherlands. Origin is a starting point, not a verdict.

That said, there are real differences between UK-registered and European-registered machinery that every overseas buyer should understand — in documentation, spec, condition patterns, and availability of certain models. This guide covers all of them plainly.

What "UK machinery" actually means

When buyers say "UK machinery," they typically mean machines that were last registered, sold, and used in the United Kingdom. This is distinct from where the machine was manufactured — JCB is British, but Volvo and Doosan are not, and all three sell heavily into the UK market. The relevant question isn't where the machine was built; it's where it's been working, how it was maintained, and what documentation follows it.

UK-registered used machinery has a few consistent characteristics. Documentation is in English: service books, MoT-equivalent certificates where applicable, auction descriptions and condition reports. For self-propelled machines that travel on public roads, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and DVSA records add a layer of verifiable history that mainland Europe doesn't always have an equivalent for. And the UK auction market is competitive and mature, which means presentation standards are generally high — a machine that looks rough in a UK auction listing genuinely is rough.

Post-Brexit, UK-manufactured machinery follows UKCA marking (UK Conformity Assessed) rather than CE marking. For used machinery being imported outside Europe, this has no practical impact on importability — the relevant standards in your destination country are local, not European. It only becomes relevant if you're ever re-exporting a machine back into the EU, which is an unusual scenario.

What continental European machinery looks like

Continental European machinery spans a wider range of makes, maintenance cultures, and condition profiles than the UK market does. The headline difference: some of the best-maintained used machinery in the world comes from Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, where machines are routinely stored indoors, serviced at exact intervals, and sold with complete records. The headline caution: machines from Southern and Eastern European markets can show considerably more wear for their age — harder work cycles, less indoor storage, and more variable service discipline.

This doesn't mean European machines are worse — it means source country within Europe matters more than "European vs UK" as a blanket category. A five-year-old German Fendt with a full dealer history is a different proposition from a same-age Polish machine with partial records and hard agricultural use.

Where European machinery wins: certain makes and models are simply far more common in continental European markets than in the UK. Fendt, Claas, Deutz-Fahr, Krone, Kuhn, Grimme — these brands dominate European agricultural markets in a way they don't in the UK. If you want a specific Fendt model or a specialist Claas combine configuration at a sensible price, you're sourcing from Europe. The UK market simply won't have the same depth of supply.

Spec differences that actually affect you

Most spec differences between UK and European machinery are minor or irrelevant for overseas buyers. But a few matter.

Language of manuals and operator displays: A machine sold new in Germany, France or Poland will have its operator manual and — on modern machines — its on-board display system in that language. For the vast majority of buyers this is an inconvenience rather than a problem: English operator manuals can usually be obtained from the manufacturer, and digital systems can often be switched between language settings in the menu. But for very old machines with mechanical controls, a German-language manual is what you have. Factor this in when budgeting — not as a deal-breaker, but as something to handle before the machine arrives.

Tyre sizes: European agricultural machinery often uses metric tyre sizing; UK machines may use the same or imperial-derived sizing. Both are widely available globally — mixing conventions is fine, and replacement tyres are not harder to source for one over the other in most markets. Worth noting in your pre-purchase spec check, nothing more.

Hydraulic couplings on implements: Some European agricultural machines use coupling standards that differ slightly from UK equivalents on certain older implements. For the machine itself this is irrelevant; if you're buying a tractor to run existing implements, check coupling compatibility with your local dealer before buying.

Electrical systems: 12v and 24v systems are standard across both markets. Modern CAN bus electronics are the same regardless of origin — there are no meaningful electrical incompatibilities between UK and European machinery at the machine level.

Parts availability: the brand matters more than the country

This is where buyers sometimes make an error. They assume European machinery is harder to support in Australia, New Zealand or elsewhere, when the actual question is whether the brand has dealer presence in the destination country.

For the major global brands — John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Volvo, Caterpillar, Doosan, Komatsu — parts availability is the same whether the machine came from Leeds or Stuttgart. The supply chain is global and the machine's registration history is irrelevant to parts ordering.

For the major European agricultural brands — Fendt, Claas, Deutz-Fahr, AGCO, Krone, Kuhn — dealer networks in Australia, New Zealand and most established markets are strong. Parts are routinely available, and these brands are well understood by local mechanics in most agricultural markets. Buying a European-registered Fendt for shipment to Australia is not a parts problem.

Where to be careful: smaller regional European brands with thin international dealer presence. Some Italian vineyard equipment, some Eastern European tractor brands, some specialist Central European kit. Before buying any machine from a manufacturer you're unfamiliar with, confirm that a dealer or parts distributor is operating in your country. One call to a local dealer answers this question definitively.

The other parts variable is age. A 30-year-old machine from anywhere will be harder to support than a 10-year-old machine, regardless of origin. Age matters far more than geography when it comes to parts supply.

Documentation and history: the most practical difference

This is the area where origin genuinely does create work for an overseas buyer.

UK machines come with English documentation: service books, DVLA history (where relevant), auction condition reports, and HPI finance checks that confirm whether a machine is unencumbered. For a buyer working remotely — from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or elsewhere — English documentation is faster and cheaper to verify. You can read the service book yourself. You don't need a translation to identify whether service intervals are complete.

European machines come with documentation in the local language. A complete German-language Fendt service book is an excellent piece of history — but you need someone who reads German to tell you that. A French auction house condition report is perfectly useful — but it doesn't tell you much if you're working from a PDF and don't read French.

None of this is a barrier to buying European. It's a reason to work with someone on the ground who can read the records, query the dealer directly, and give you a verified summary. The information is there; you just need the right hands to get it.

Verifying European service history: for Fendt, Claas, Deutz-Fahr and other brands with digital dealer systems, a franchised UK or European dealer can pull the machine's service record by VIN or machine serial number. This bypasses the language question entirely and gives you a manufacturer-level confirmation of what was done and when. Always ask for this before committing.

Condition for age: where origin is a real signal

For construction plant, condition for age is driven primarily by the type of work the machine has been doing — groundwork versus road building, light civils versus heavy quarrying. A low-hours UK excavator that spent its life on road schemes will be in better shape than a similar-aged one that was digging rock in a quarry. This is consistent across both UK and European markets.

For agricultural machinery, geography adds a layer. Climate matters: machines in the UK's wet, moderate climate develop different wear patterns to those in Provence or Bavaria. Storage matters: Scandinavian and Dutch farms routinely store equipment under cover; in other markets outdoor storage is standard. Work cycles matter: a Finnish farm running 1,000 hours a year has a different machine profile to a Spanish vineyard running 400.

The practical upshot: the best European machines (Scandinavian, Dutch, German) are often genuinely better-preserved than their UK equivalents for the same year and hours. The weaker European machines (bought cheaply from Southern or Eastern European auctions without proper history checks) can be more tired than anything you'd typically see at a reputable UK auction. The origin country is a starting filter; an independent inspection is what tells you which category you're actually in.

The honest verdict

After 23 years in this market and 635 machines across both the UK and Europe, here's what I've seen:

Brand and documented maintenance history are the dominant factors in what a machine is worth and how it performs. A well-maintained Fendt from Bavaria with a complete dealer service record is an excellent purchase. A same-spec UK-registered tractor that's been field-maintained without proper records is a gamble, regardless of the familiarity of the documentation language.

The practical advantages of UK-sourced machinery for overseas buyers are: documentation in English (faster to verify remotely), a mature and competitive auction market where presentation tends to be honest, and the logistical simplicity of a single-country supply chain. These are real. For many buyers and many machine types, sourcing from the UK is the right call.

The practical advantages of European-sourced machinery are: greater depth of supply on certain brands and model types, often lower auction prices for equivalent spec, and access to machines that were simply never popular in the UK market. If you want a specific Fendt model, a Claas combine, or a specialist piece of German agricultural kit, Europe is where you source it — and the documentation and inspection process, with the right people on the ground, is manageable.

The question worth asking isn't "UK or Europe?" — it's "what's the best available machine for this spec and budget, and can it be properly verified?" The answer to that question sometimes points to the UK, sometimes to Germany, sometimes to the Netherlands. We work across all of them.

Is UK machinery better quality than European machinery?

Not as a general rule. Quality depends on brand, age, how the machine was used and whether it was properly maintained — all of which vary as much within the UK or within Europe as they do between them. Scandinavian and German machines in particular are often extremely well-maintained, frequently stored indoors, and come with complete service histories. The source country is a rough proxy at best; the actual machine and its paperwork tell you far more.

Will I be able to get parts for a European machine in Australia or New Zealand?

For the major brands — Fendt, Claas, Deutz-Fahr, Krone, Kuhn, John Deere, Case, New Holland — dealer networks are global and parts are available in Australia, New Zealand and most other markets. The brand matters much more than the country where the machine was registered. Where you need to be careful is with smaller regional European brands that have thin or no dealer presence in your destination country. Confirm dealer coverage locally before buying any unfamiliar make.

Do European machines come with CE marking? Does that matter for importing?

Machines manufactured and sold in the EU carry CE marking. UK-manufactured machines now carry UKCA marking post-Brexit. For used machinery being imported outside Europe — to Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the Gulf — neither marking is a direct import requirement. What matters in those markets are local operator safety standards (ROPS certification in particular for agricultural machinery) and destination-country regulations. Your local importer and compliance consultant can advise on any machine-specific requirements.

European service records are in German or French — can I verify them?

Yes. Service records in European languages are verifiable — a translation of key entries is straightforward, and dealer stamps, dates and hour readings are legible regardless of language. Major manufacturers including Fendt, Claas and Deutz-Fahr have digital service record systems that a franchised dealer can query by VIN. The records take slightly more work to verify than an English service book, but they are not less reliable — a complete German-language service book is more valuable than an incomplete English one.

Are there machine types only available from mainland Europe?

Yes. Some models were historically stronger sellers in specific European markets and are simply far more common there than in the UK — certain Fendt and Deutz-Fahr tractor models, some Claas combine configurations, specialist Krone or Kuhn forage equipment, and various vineyard and orchard machinery. If the machine you need falls into this category, sourcing from mainland Europe is not a second choice — it is the primary route to a well-priced, well-conditioned example.
