What container consolidation actually means
When you ship machinery overseas, you have three main options for how the cargo travels.
FCL — Full Container Load: You book an entire container. The whole box is yours. This makes sense if your cargo fills it, or if you want control over what travels alongside your machines. You pay for the container regardless of how full it is.
LCL / groupage (consolidated): Your cargo shares a container with other shippers' goods. You pay only for the space you use — calculated on the greater of cubic metres or tonnes, depending on which is larger for your cargo. This is what people mean by container consolidation.
RoRo — Roll-on/Roll-off: The machine is driven onto a vessel under its own power and secured on deck or in the hold. No container is used. This suits larger, self-propelled machines and works quite differently from container shipping — it's not usually what we're talking about when we discuss consolidation.
For most overseas machinery buyers who need two or more compact machines, consolidation — sharing a single container between your machines — is where the cost saving comes from. Instead of booking separate containers (or paying for underused space in each), your combined cargo fills one box and you split the container cost across it.
When consolidation makes sense — and when it doesn't
Consolidation rewards buyers who need multiple compact machines going to the same destination port at roughly the same time. The maths work well when each machine is too small to justify a dedicated container on its own, but together they fill one efficiently.
It works less well in these situations:
Mismatched sizes: Fitting a 3-tonne compact excavator alongside a 15-tonne machine usually isn't practical — different transport methods, different loading requirements. Consolidation is primarily for compact machinery that can physically share a standard container.
Timing gaps: If one machine is ready now and the others won't be sourced and cleaned for another six weeks, holding finished cargo at a port terminal accumulates storage costs. Consolidation works best when machines can be ready to load within a reasonable window of each other.
Very different destinations: All machines in a consolidated container clear at the same port. If you need one machine in Auckland and another in Brisbane, they're not consolidating — they're two separate shipments.
Highly time-sensitive delivery: Consolidation adds a layer of coordination. The container only moves when it's ready to load. For buyers where delivery timing is critical, a dedicated container on a known sailing is simpler to plan around.
How a consolidated shipment is put together
In practice, the process looks like this:
Each machine is sourced from its respective seller — they may be at different locations across the UK or Europe. Once purchased, each machine goes to a professional cleaning contractor to be prepared for biosecurity inspection. A cleaning certificate is issued for each machine individually.
The machines are then collected and brought to a freight forwarder's yard or consolidation depot in the UK. Here, they are prepared for loading:
Stripping: Buckets, attachments, mirrors, aerials, and sometimes cabs need to come off certain machines to get dimensions down to what the container can accept. This is normal but adds time and some labour cost at origin — and the same items need to be reattached at the destination.
Loading: The machines are lifted or driven into the container and positioned to use the available floor space efficiently. The arrangement matters — poorly planned loading wastes space and can cause machines to shift in transit.
Securing: Everything is braced and strapped to the container floor and walls using timber blocking and lashing. This is standard practice on any containerised machinery shipment. Done properly, the machines arrive in the same condition they left.
The container then moves as a single consignment on one bill of lading. At the destination, it clears customs and biosecurity together — and this is where the complication comes in.
The biosecurity rule that changes everything
Here is what buyers consistently underestimate when they plan a consolidated shipment without taking advice: the container is one unit at the border. The machines in it are not examined independently for the purpose of holding or releasing the consignment — if one machine causes a biosecurity problem, the whole container is held.
One contaminated machine stops everything. If biosecurity inspectors find soil, plant material, insects or other organic contamination on one machine in a consolidated container, the entire box — and every machine in it — can be detained for re-inspection, cleaning or treatment at the border. Storage fees, re-inspection charges and any required treatment apply to the whole consignment, not just the machine at fault.
This is not a theoretical edge case. It happens, and it matters enormously to how you plan the cleaning stage.
The practical rule is simple: treat every machine in a consolidated load exactly as you would treat it if it were shipping alone. Same professional cleaning contractor, same cleaning standard, same documentation. There is no logic in doing a thorough job on one machine and cutting corners on another when they're going to arrive together and be inspected together.
The second biosecurity consideration for consolidated loads is Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). For shipments to Australia and New Zealand during the risk season — roughly September to April — BMSB treatment must be completed before the container is sealed and loaded. If any machine in the container requires BMSB treatment, the simplest approach is to treat all of them. A single untreated machine in a container that gets flagged for BMSB creates exactly the same whole-container problem.
New Zealand's BMSB pathway is stricter than Australia's. Unlike Australia, New Zealand has no on-arrival BMSB treatment option — compliance is through an MPI-approved offshore treatment or system-management route completed before the machine arrives, and some exclusions can apply. What it costs — and why there is no number on this page
Container consolidation costs vary too much to quote usefully without knowing the specifics. The variables that determine price include the dimensions and weight of each machine, whether attachments need to be stripped and repackaged, the loading port and destination port, the freight line and current market rates, whether BMSB treatment is required, and the total cubic volume of the consolidated load.
The honest position: any number you find online — whether from a general freight calculator or an article like this one — is a guess in the context of your specific machines and route. Freight rates also move with market conditions; a figure that was accurate six months ago may not be today.

What it comes down to in practice
Container consolidation is genuinely useful for buyers who need more than one compact machine and are prepared to plan the shipment properly. The cost saving over separate shipments is real. The complication is not the loading or the logistics — freight forwarders handle consolidated loads every week. The complication is biosecurity: a consolidated container only moves as fast as its weakest machine, and the cleaning and documentation standard has to be consistent across every unit in the box.

Frequently asked questions
How many machines can fit in a 40ft container?
It depends entirely on the dimensions of each machine. A 40ft standard container has internal dimensions of roughly 12m × 2.35m × 2.39m (length, width, height). Two compact excavators or small telehandlers can often share one, stripped of buckets and attachments. A single mid-size machine can occupy most of the floor space on its own. Can machines purchased from different sellers be consolidated?
Yes — that's actually common. If you're buying a compact excavator from one dealer and a telehandler from another, both can be collected from different UK locations, cleaned and documented separately, then loaded into the same container at a freight forwarder's yard. They travel on the same bill of lading but each still has its own commercial invoice and cleaning certificate.
What happens if one machine fails biosecurity in a consolidated shipment?
The entire container can be held while the problem is resolved. Border storage, re-inspection fees and any required treatment apply to everything in the box, not just the machine that failed. This is the single most important reason to apply exactly the same cleaning standard to every machine in a consolidated load — there's no benefit to getting one machine through perfectly if another holds the whole consignment.
Does container consolidation work for larger machines?
It works best for compact machines — excavators under roughly 8 tonnes, smaller tractors, telehandlers, attachments. Machines above that size, or wider than a standard container's internal width of about 2.35m, normally travel as RoRo or breakbulk, which works differently and isn't typically consolidated in the same way. If you have a mix of sizes, we can work out which go in a container and which travel separately.
Does each machine in a consolidated shipment get its own paperwork?
Yes. Each machine has its own commercial invoice, packing list, cleaning certificate and any required biosecurity documentation, even though they share a container and a single bill of lading. At the destination, customs and biosecurity authorities can and do examine each machine individually. Keep each machine's paperwork complete and separate.
Is container consolidation available for shipments to Australia and New Zealand?
Yes, it's a well-established option for both destinations.
